yoga in schools

Finding space for stillness.....

Schools, colleges and universities can be very hectic and fast paced environments. The pressures of the current education system places students and teachers under a huge amount of stress.

It's therefore essential that children, young people and teachers find ways of nurturing their wellbeing and emotional resilience. Finding space for stillness is vital for students and teachers.

For students, red tree yoga offers yoga sessions for students aged 3-18. These sessions are integrated into the school day, enabling students to move away from their desks, creating time and space to stretch and move. Most importantly, these yoga sessions also create a neutral space for stillness, simplicity and calm, providing a much needed sensory break from the busy school environment.

We also offer a Yoga for Exams project which is designed specifically for students sitting SATs tests, secondary school exams or university assessments.

All of our yoga in school projects aim to leave teachers with simple but effective movement and breathing practices that can be used within everyday school life, especially within the classroom.

More recently, red tree yoga has developed yoga sessions for children with Special Needs, including working with students with autism, ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome and other speech, language and physical needs.

We can deliver yoga sessions in number of ways: as a long term input over an academic year or a block of sessions across a number of weeks. Yoga sessions can be themed so that they support and 'bring to life' thematic teaching that is happening back in the classroom.

Yoga in schools can support students to...

Boost confidence

Develop focus and concentration

Improve coordination and balance

Build flexibility, strength and fitness

Develop resilience and ability to deal with challenges

Regulating hormones (especially during the teenage years!)

Creating a sense of inner stillness, peace and calm

Encouraging relaxation

Feel successful because yoga can be adapted to any ability or learning need.

Refresh and energise the mind and body, ready for more learning back in the classroom!

'Our original idea behind introducing children in our school to yoga was to support improved focus and concentration; the result has surpassed all hopes we had. The children love the sessions which harmonise freedom of movement, sustained stillness, relaxation, self-control and stamina boosting. Parents report better quality sleep and behaviour on yoga days.  Teachers report on more focussed, attentative children who have improved concentration and understanding of how to control their feelings and emotions: consequently they learn and progress more effectively.
What a result, yoga is here to stay!!
