I hope it provides a sensory break from the busy environment of school, an inviting and open space for yoga and drama sessions. It's uncluttered, my resources are carefully hidden away in baskets, wooden cupboards and vintage suitcases. Years of collecting, second hand purchases and up cycling have provided all of this!!
I've added hints of colour this week...coloured leaves and fabric hanging or draped around the room, in shades of colour inspired by nature. I opt not to use the overhead lights as they are too harsh and many of my special needs students do not like them...instead I have placed lamps and lights around the room for a gentler glow. The leaves and fabric are made of transparent materials such as chiffon or muslin so that the effect is soft, translucent, light and relaxing...stimulating yet subtle. I will often use lavender or cedar oil to support students in relaxation and grounding.
I feel blessed to have this studio to work in...I will enjoy it while I have it!! This week it has been a space for yoga and drama sessions for children, yoga for the hard working teachers in this school...and a safe space within which to hold a parent's multi faith group.
When I work in other spaces I try to use the principles I have developed within this room as much as I can...a multi sensory space which is not too overwhelming, creating a sense of possibility and exploration, using light, smell and sound very carefully, an uncluttered space which is still warm, safe and inviting.
